For the second part of my series on the incredible design behind the TetonX trailer, I was again thrilled to sit down with Ben, the lead engineer at Atlas Outdoors . Ben took time out of his busy day to walk me through the details of the Nomad Suspension , the system that gives the TetonX trailer its off-road prowess. Seeing this suspension up close—and learning about its thoughtful design—only deepened my appreciation for the craftsmanship and engineering that go into every TetonX trailer.
The Nomad Suspension is the backbone of the TetonX trailer’s off-road capability. Built by hand in St. George, Utah , this independent trailing arm suspension system is designed to tackle rugged terrain while offering an unmatched level of comfort and control.
Unlike traditional suspensions, the Nomad’s pivot point is located in front of the wheel. This forward placement allows the suspension to absorb impacts more effectively, resulting in a smoother ride and less wear on the trailer. At the heart of the system is a robust airbag setup, which provides the softest ride possible compared to coil springs or leaf springs. The airbag minimizes vibration, protects your gear, and keeps the trailer in peak condition—even in the toughest conditions.
One of the standout features of the Nomad Suspension is its adjustability. This system adapts to your specific needs, whether balancing uneven loads or leveling the trailer at camp. Each airbag can be adjusted independently using the onboard control panel, making it easy to accommodate extra weight from gear or water. At camp, the same controls allow you to quickly level the trailer by raising or lowering either side. This flexibility extends to practical situations like lowering the trailer for easier access to the kitchen or awning or raising it for additional clearance on the trail.
The suspension also features dual shocks on each arm, which provide significant advantages over single-shock setups. Dual shocks work together to reduce rebound, keeping the trailer stable even on rugged terrain. This is especially important for off-roading, where the independent arms encounter different conditions on either side of the trailer. By distributing the workload, dual shocks reduce wear on the suspension components and ensure a smoother ride overall.
The Nomad Suspension includes robust brake and hub assemblies built to handle the demands of off-road adventures. 12” electric brakes provide peace of mind when slowing down or descending hills. Brake wiring is loomed and routed through protective guides, ensuring it stays safe from debris and rough conditions. Together, these components deliver reliable stopping power and robust performance with minimal maintenance.
Every Nomad Suspension system is handcrafted in St. George, Utah , using high-quality materials built to last. The trailing arms are made with quarter-inch wall thickness. The thicker steel is dual shield welded for an extremely strong bond that is often used in structural welds on buildings. Powder-coated steel ensures maximum corrosion resistance. The craftsmanship reflects a commitment to durability, making the Nomad Suspension a dependable choice for serious off-road adventurers.
With five inches of travel, the suspension handles extreme trails effortlessly, while 15 inches of ground clearance under the suspension (when paired with 35-inch tires) provides the confidence to clear obstacles. The axle-less setup allows for 21” of ground clearance in the center of trailer. The onboard air compressor and reservoir tank make suspension adjustments simple and fast, while also doubling as a portable air source for reinflating vehicle tires after airing down on the trail.
TetonX backs the Nomad Suspension with a five-year warranty on all steel components, giving you the confidence to take on even the roughest adventures. Third-party components, such as the airbags and brakes , are covered by their respective manufacturers for comprehensive coverage .
The Nomad Suspension isn’t just a feature—it’s a solution for adventurers who demand more from their gear. Whether you’re tackling rugged trails or setting up camp on uneven ground, the Nomad Suspension offers the durability, comfort, and flexibility to make every trip unforgettable.
